REBUILD YOUR LIFE BY UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION AND THE UNDERLYING TRAUMA THAT FUELS IT

Addiction often stems from unresolved trauma. Uncover the root causes of your struggles and take the first step toward lasting recovery with tools that address both the addiction and the trauma behind it.

If you’ve found yourself trapped in cycles of addiction, through substance use or behavioural habits, it may be because the underlying causes are rooted in trauma.

  • Many people struggle to break free from addictive patterns without seeing the deeper wounds that drive them. In this module, you’ll learn how addiction and complex trauma are connected, explore triggers and coping mechanisms, and gain insight into healthier ways forward.

  • Addiction often feels overwhelming and confusing, leaving people stuck in painful cycles they can’t easily escape. In this module, you’ll learn what addiction really is, how it connects to childhood trauma and brain changes, and the many ways it shows up in daily life. Alongside this understanding, you’ll be introduced to practical tools like self-reflection, goal-setting, and healthy coping strategies to begin navigating addiction with clarity and support.

  • Addiction can feel confusing when we don’t understand how deeply it rewires the brain and shapes our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. In this module, you’ll learn how substances impact brain chemistry, why trauma leaves the brain vulnerable, and how triggers fuel addictive cycles. You’ll also be guided through practical tools like trigger mapping, journaling, and coping strategies to recognize patterns and respond in healthier ways.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Addiction doesn’t just affect one part of life—it impacts the body, mind, relationships, and spirit, often in ways rooted in childhood trauma. In this module, you’ll explore how complex trauma shapes psychological, social, and biological patterns, and use practical exercises like self-reflection and connection-mapping to uncover the deeper “why” behind addiction and its effects.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Addiction recovery is about more than stopping behaviors—it also touches on the spiritual wounds left by complex trauma. In this module, you’ll explore how distorted views of self, shame, and early experiences shape spirituality, and learn practical tools like self-reflection, parenting style insights, and humility practices to better understand the role of connection, purpose, and meaning in healing.

    Introduction • Lessons • Videos

  • Addiction is rarely the core problem—it often masks deeper wounds like unresolved trauma, emotional pain, and unmet needs. In this module, you’ll explore how addiction functions as a coping mechanism, why healing requires addressing root causes rather than just behaviors, and engage in reflective exercises to uncover the underlying issues driving addictive patterns.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Complex trauma reshapes both the brain and nervous system, leaving lasting effects on thoughts, emotions, health, and relationships. In this module, you’ll learn how trauma disrupts regulation, fuels survival patterns, and creates barriers to connection, while exploring practical tools—from self-reflection to “top-down” and “bottom-up” strategies—that support healing and long-term recovery.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Many people battling addiction relapse because traditional treatments overlook the deep impact of trauma. In this module, you’ll learn why trauma-informed care is essential for lasting recovery, how unsafe patterns from the past shape treatment needs, and explore practical tools like recognizing unhealthy relationship dynamics, social network mapping, and self-reflection to build safer, healthier connections in recovery.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Recovery isn’t just about stopping addictive behaviors—it’s about healing the whole person. In this module, you’ll explore how physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being are interconnected, learn about concepts like the “five people inside us” and our default settings, and practice holistic tools that build healthier patterns for lasting recovery.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Recovery often feels discouraging when progress doesn’t match our hopes or timelines, but unrealistic expectations can set us up for relapse. In this module, you’ll learn how to set compassionate, realistic goals for recovery, understand the role of boundaries in protecting sobriety, and explore practical exercises for letting go of harmful patterns while building healthier ones.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Recovery isn’t a quick fix—it’s a layered process that touches every part of life. In this module, you’ll learn the “seven levels of change,” from abstinence and situational shifts to deeper transformations in behavior, thinking, emotions, relationships, and core beliefs, along with practical exercises like daily scheduling and reflection to make lasting progress feel achievable.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Fear and old patterns often fuel relapse, making it difficult to stay on the path of recovery. In this module, you’ll explore how fears show up in daily life, identify early warning signs of relapse, and practice tools for building new habits, strengthening support systems, and creating a personalized relapse prevention plan.

    Introduction • Lessons • Video

  • Lasting change requires shifting from a victim mindset to taking ownership of thoughts, beliefs, and actions. In this module, you’ll learn how trauma shapes negative core beliefs, uncover distortions like shame and self-criticism, and use practical exercises—such as cognitive restructuring, reframing thoughts, and inner child work—to replace harmful patterns with healthier foundations.

ALIGN FAQs

Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you. - Gabor Maté

Our programs and training environments encourage participants to look at early childhood environments with a different type of lens; not only focusing on seemingly obvious, (largely traumatic) events, but on all of the pieces that may have played a role. We investigate biological, psychological, social and spiritual factors with a measure of curiosity, compassion and love. By examining the entire picture, we are able to see that several aspects of early childhood can be traumatic, resulting in shame-based identity development, unsound coping adaptations, and unhealthy relationship attachments.

We’re here to safely connect with, and explore that journey of discovery - together!
