What is a RE/ACT Program and How Does it Work?

RE/ACT teaches Recovery Education for Addictions and Complex Trauma. Our available in-person courses are offered in a variety of modalities. Our most popular is our Essentials program, taught at one of our partnering organizations, through Program Integrations and at Centres. All programming is available for participants age 18+*.

Twelve, one-week-long modules are designed to help participants in recovery from addictions and other mental health issues. These modules are split into two phases, PHASE 1 and PHASE 2.

PHASE 1: Participants will be introduced to the concepts of Complex Trauma and learn valuable tools which will aid in PHASE 2, and in long-term recovery. Participants will also receive support from loving mentors, coaches or counsellors - wherever they are available.

PHASE 2: Participants will take deep dives each week into concepts that are prevalent for people coming from Complex Trauma. Each module begins with exploring the concept through the lens of Complex Trauma, self-application or awareness, and then tools to cope with each issue.

Our in-person programs consist of videos and/or classroom discussion, focus questions, and individual support. Participants must participate daily (aside from excused absences) in the meetings in order to receive a certificate for the course. The meetings are important for offering support, facilitating a community atmosphere, and allowing for class discussion. Participants who are in need of coaching have the option to connect with someone who can give them a weekly support session.

All locations will welcome each participant with dignity and respect, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religious beliefs or otherwise, and will ensure that our staff members and other participants cooperate with courtesy, understanding, and most importantly - love.

  • Apart from any location offering our ACCEL program, geared specifically for teenagers.

What is Complex Trauma or C-PTSD?

Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you. - Gabor Mate

Trauma is someone’s response to a deeply scary or harmful event that makes them unable to cope. Complex Trauma is defined as the response to an ongoing environment of danger where one never feels safe. This response constantly signals a stress response such as fight, flight or freeze. It affects every aspect of a person - their bodies, relationships, brains and ability to have a spiritual connection. Tim Fletcher has identified 60 Characteristics of Complex Trauma which may help you put the pieces together as to how it may have affected you.

Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you. - Gabor Maté

Our programs and training environments encourage participants to look at early childhood environments with a different type of lens; not only focusing on seemingly obvious, (largely traumatic) events, but on all of the pieces that may have played a role. We investigate biological, psychological, social and spiritual factors with a measure of curiosity, compassion and love. By examining the entire picture, we are able to see that several aspects of early childhood can be traumatic, resulting in shame-based identity development, unsound coping adaptations, and unhealthy relationship attachments.

We’re here to safely connect with, and help you explore that journey of discovery - together!
